Granules in the gutters
Asphalt shingles shed their mineral surface as they age. A handful of grit at the downspout after the first rain is normal on a new roof. Cupfuls on a fifteen year old roof means the mat underneath is now taking UV directly.
A solar system is only as good as the roof beneath it. Nuon Energy replaces aging shingle, tile and flat roofs across Southern California and pairs them with a PV system so you never re-roof around solar twice. In Del Mar (92014), Nuon crews design every install around NEM 3.0 rates, 265 usable sun days a year, and the specific roof and load profiles we see across Del Mar Terrace, Del Mar Heights, Beach Colony, Olde Del Mar.

Nuon Energy installs residential roofing across Del Mar and the surrounding coastal Southern California area. Our regional crews keep the same in-house team on your project from design through PTO, no subcontracted labor and no handoffs.
Our in-house roofing crews install GAF and Owens Corning shingle systems, concrete and clay tile, and TPO for low-slope sections. Every re-roof includes a full tear-off, deck inspection, ice-and-water underlayment where required, and updated flashings around vents and skylights.
Because the same company owns the roof and the solar, you get one point of accountability for leaks, warranty claims and future service, no finger-pointing between contractors when something needs attention.
Local context: Salt spray west of Camino Del Mar is aggressive enough to demand marine-grade fasteners and quarterly hardware inspection, we bake that into a maintenance plan rather than leaving it on the homeowner.
Permits & incentives in Del Mar: City of Del Mar permits residential solar in about 3 weeks; view-corridor and coastal-zone review add time for beachfront and heights properties. The federal clean energy tax credit, the San Diego Community Power battery rebate, and Del Mar's shoreline resilience program provides consultation for coastal-adaptation upgrades.
Most roofs do not fail overnight. They give you two or three seasons of warnings first, and almost all of them are visible from the ground or the attic if you know what you are looking at. If any of the following sound like your house, a free inspection is worth an hour of your morning.
Asphalt shingles shed their mineral surface as they age. A handful of grit at the downspout after the first rain is normal on a new roof. Cupfuls on a fifteen year old roof means the mat underneath is now taking UV directly.
A brown ring on drywall is a late symptom. Get in the attic with a flashlight after a storm and look at the underside of the plywood near valleys and penetrations. Dark streaks and rusted nail shanks mean water is already getting in.
Concrete and clay tile last decades, but the underlayment beneath them does not. Slipped pieces, broken corners, and mortar dust in the gutters usually mean the felt has gone brittle and the roof is watertight on borrowed time.
If an installer is happy to bolt an array onto a roof with five years left, they are handing you a removal-and-reinstall bill later. We would rather tell you to re-roof first and do both under one permit.
Poor ridge and soffit ventilation traps attic air near 140 degrees on a Southern California August afternoon. Your air conditioning fights that all day. It shows up on the utility bill long before it shows up as a leak.
Sealant is a maintenance product, not a repair. A chimney or skylight that has been re-caulked by three different handymen needs the flashing rebuilt, not another bead of goo.
We will inspect it, photograph what we find, and give you both numbers. No pressure either way.

Nuon offers full-service roofing for homeowners seeking reliable, code-compliant, and long-lasting results. Every project begins with a thorough evaluation to identify existing or potential roofing problems, followed by a clear plan tailored to your home's structure and budget.

Residential roofs experience constant exposure to heat, UV rays, and environmental stress. Over time, this can lead to issues that compromise both protection and efficiency. Early identification prevents interior damage and costly structural repairs.

Not every roofing issue requires a full replacement. Nuon specializes in precise, cost-effective roof repairs that extend the life of existing roofing systems when damage is localized, the roof structure remains sound, and materials are still within their service life.
When a roof reaches the end of its lifespan or sustains extensive damage, replacement becomes the safest and most cost-effective option. We install modern systems designed to improve durability, energy efficiency, and curb appeal.

Most single-family re-roofs we price in Southern California land between $12,000 and $30,000 installed. Square footage matters, but it is rarely the thing that moves the number most. Pitch decides whether the crew can walk the roof or has to work off staging. Penetrations decide how many flashing details have to be rebuilt by hand. And the condition of the plywood underneath is the line item nobody can see from the driveway.
Asphalt shingle is the cheapest per square and the fastest to install. Concrete and clay tile cost more in labor because every piece is handled twice, once on the way off and once on the way back, but tile shrugs off UV in a way asphalt never will. Low-slope sections need a membrane, a different crew, and a different warranty, so a house with a flat porch roof is really two roofing jobs sharing one permit.
We quote deck repair as a unit price rather than burying it in the total. If the crew pulls the old layer and finds six sheets of soft plywood near a valley, you see six sheets on the invoice at the price you already agreed to. No renegotiation halfway through, no surprise change order on day three.

A roof warranty is only worth the company standing behind it. You get the manufacturer material warranty, typically 25 to 50 years depending on the product line, plus a 10-year Nuon workmanship warranty that covers install defects and leaks. Those are two different documents and they cover two different failures, so we walk you through both at handover instead of handing you a folder.
Practically, most callbacks are not the field of the roof. They are flashing, a sealant joint at a skylight, or a satellite dish somebody screwed through the shingles two years later. Those calls get scheduled, not argued about. If it is our workmanship, there is no invoice.
Every roof we install goes into our service record with the photos from tear-off, the deck condition, the underlayment used, and the array layout if solar went on with it. When you call in year seven, we already know what is up there before the truck rolls.
Every line below is in the written scope before the first nail comes out. Nothing here is an upsell we bring up on day two of the tear-off.
Not included: structural framing repair, asbestos abatement on pre-1980 layers, and stucco patching, all quoted separately and only after you approve.

A standard single-family re-roof is a three to five day job on site. The paperwork around it takes longer than the roofing does, and we handle that part.
Day 1, about 60 minutes
We walk the roof, get into the attic, photograph every penetration and problem area, and measure the planes. You get the photos whether you hire us or not.
Within 48 hours
Line item pricing, per-sheet deck repair rate, product line, color, and the warranty documents that come with each option. If your roof only needs a repair, the proposal will say so.
1 to 3 weeks
We pull the city or county permit, order material to the site, and lock a start date. If solar is going on the same roof, both permits move together.
Day 1 on site
Old roofing comes off, the deck gets inspected in daylight, and you get a call with photos before any replacement plywood goes down.
Days 2 to 4
Underlayment, flashings, field material, ridge vent. The roof is watertight at the end of every single working day, not just at the end of the job.
Day 5 and after
City inspector signs off, we register the manufacturer warranty in your name, and the photo record goes into our service file for the life of the roof.
Step one starts with a site survey. Most homeowners are booked within a few days.

Not every roof needs replacing today. Here is how we talk homeowners through the decision before anyone signs anything.
If panels are going up in the next year or two, replacing the roof first saves you the cost of removing and reinstalling the array later.
Once you have patched the same area twice, the underlayment is usually the problem, not the shingle above it.
Asphalt in Southern California sun ages faster than the brochure suggests. Past two decades, the math usually favors replacement.
A new roof is one of the few upgrades that protects everything else in the house, and it follows you into resale value.
A handful of cracked tiles or one bad valley is a repair, not a project. We will quote the repair and move on.
If the sheathing is dry and the flashing details are intact, you can often buy five to eight more years with targeted work.
A documented repair plus an inspection report often satisfies a buyer for far less money than a tear-off.
We are happy to stage the work, do the urgent section now and the rest next season, rather than push a full job you did not plan for.
Still weighing it up? We will walk your site and tell you which column you fall into.

| System | Expected service life | Best suited to |
|---|---|---|
| Architectural asphalt shingle | 25 to 30 years | Most pitched tract homes, best cost per square, easiest solar mounting |
| Concrete tile | 40 to 50 years | Spanish and Mediterranean elevations, inland heat, HOA-controlled streets |
| Clay tile | 50 years plus | Historic and custom homes where profile and color retention matter |
| Standing seam metal | 40 to 50 years | Modern elevations and fire-zone parcels, clamp-mounted solar with zero penetrations |
| TPO or modified bitumen | 20 to 25 years | Flat porch roofs, additions, and low-slope sections behind a parapet |

Every number above appears as its own line on your proposal. We do not quote a single lump sum and ask you to trust it.
Get your numberMost single-family re-roofs we price in Southern California land between $12,000 and $30,000. Square footage is only part of it. Pitch, the number of penetrations, how many layers have to come off, and whether the deck needs repair all move the number more than people expect.
Tile is heavier and slower to install than asphalt, so labor is higher, but it lasts longer under UV. Low-slope sections need a membrane rather than shingles, which is a different crew and a different warranty. We break every line out on the proposal so you can see exactly where the money goes.
Roofing and solar are usually sold by two different companies, which is how homeowners end up paying twice. Nuon does both with in-house crews, so the array layout is planned around vents, valleys and future service access before a single shingle goes down.
Doing them together also means one permit package, one inspection sequence, and one company on the hook if water ever finds a way in. That is the practical reason to bundle, not a sales pitch.

Most solar companies subcontract roofing and most roofers subcontract solar. When something leaks around a mount, the homeowner is left refereeing. We removed that problem by owning both trades in house.
Roof and solar move through plan check together, which usually saves two to four weeks compared with running them as separate projects with separate contractors.
Standoffs get set and flashed while the underlayment is open, which is the only time it can be done properly. Retrofitting mounts into a finished roof is where most leaks are born.
If water shows up inside, it is our roof and our array. There is no second contractor to blame and no warranty gap between the two trades.
